What's left behind the scenes
- The film is based on the autobiographical book by Greg Sestero, co-author and best friend of Tommy Wiseau. According to Sestero, Wiseau once told him that only two actors could play him in a film adaptation – James Franco or Johnny Depp.
- Zac Efron, who is 172 centimeters tall, plays a character who is 190 centimeters tall, and Dave Franco, who is 170 cm tall, plays Greg Sestero, who is 188 cm tall.
- James Franco described the project as a mix of "Boogie Nights" and "The Master".
- To get into character, Franco spoke and gave directorial instructions in the manner of Tommy Wiseau throughout the filming period. Seth Rogen admitted that it was quite difficult working under Franco-Wiseau’s direction, and the actor needed time to get used to his peculiar and funny European accent.
- A cameo by Tommy Wiseau himself can be spotted in the film.
