What's left behind the scenes

  • The heroine of the 2013 feature-length animated film "The Garden of Words", also directed by Makoto Shinkai, is a teacher of classical Japanese language at Mitsuha's school.
  • Taki works at the restaurant Il giardino delle parole, which translates from Italian as "Garden of Words". This is the title of Makoto Shinkai's previous feature-length animated film (titled "The Garden of Words" in the Russian version), released in 2013.
  • The red braided cord that Mitsuha carries with her symbolizes the invisible red thread that, in Asian cultures, connects a person to their destined fate.
  • Grandmother Hitoha's name means "one leaf" in Japanese. It then increases incrementally: the mother's name translates as "two leaves", Mitsuha's name is "three leaves", and her younger sister's name is "four leaves".
  • Itomori is a fictional town, many of whose features are borrowed from Hida, a town in the Japanese prefecture of Gifu.
  • The film's authors were inspired by "Torikaebaya Monogatari, or Confusion" (a classic tale from the Heian period, which lasted from 794 to 1185), the manga "I am now Mari" by Shuzo Oshimi, Rumiko Takahashi's manga series "Ranma 1/2" (1987-1996), and Greg Egan's novella "Safehold".
  • The film set a box office record and became the highest-grossing anime film in the world.
  • The comet in the film is named Tiamat. In Sumerian-Babylonian mythology, this is the name of the goddess personifying the world ocean-chaos, from which the world originated.
  • The storyline of the comet and the catastrophic consequences of its collision with Earth was inspired by the earthquake off the east coast of Honshu Island on March 11, 2011.
  • The red braided cord worn by Mitsuha symbolizes the invisible red thread that, in Asian cultures, connects a person to their destined fate.
  • Many features of the fictional city of Itomori were borrowed from Hida in Gifu Prefecture.
  • The authors of the film were inspired by "Torikaebaya Monogatari, or Confusion" (a classic story from the Heian period), the manga "I am now Mari" by Shuzo Oshimi, Rumiko Takahashi's manga "Ranma 1/2", and Greg Egan's short story "Safe."
  • Mitsuki's Japanese teacher is a character from the anime "The Garden of Words," which was also directed by Makoto Shinkai.
  • Taki works at the Il giardino delle parole restaurant, which translates from Italian as "the garden of words." This is the title of Makoto Shinkai's previous feature-length animated film (titled "The Garden of Words" in the Russian version).
  • The grandmother Hitohi's name means "one leaf" in Japanese. Then it goes in ascending order: the mother's name translates to "two leaves," Mitsuha's name is "three leaves," and her younger sister's name is "four leaves."
  • The authors of the film were inspired by "Torikaebaya Monogatari, or The Confusion" (a classic story from the Heian period), Shuzo Osami's manga "I am Now Mari," Rumiko Takahashi's manga "Ranma 1/2," and Greg Egan's short story "Safe."
