What's left behind the scenes
- According to director Thomas Alfredson, the film was made in a hurry. He himself joined the crew later than everyone else and claims that about 15% of the script was never filmed. Filming on location in Norway had to be shortened in order to move to London. In addition, the film's budget was simply not enough to film all the planned scenes. As a result, some plot lines in the film were not developed or explained, characters appear and disappear without explanation (like Arve, played by J.K. Simmons), and there are several obvious blunders and inconsistencies in the narrative.
- Martin Scorsese was initially appointed director of the film, but ended up as an executive producer.
- Michael Fassbender began work on the film two days after finishing shooting on Justin Kurzel's science fiction action film "Assassin's Creed" (2016).
- The film was shot primarily in Norway, but the filmmakers made every effort to ensure that the Norwegian language wasn't heard on screen, and all Norwegian signage that appeared in the frame was altered, including newspaper headlines and public transportation destinations. Police cars in Norway have the word "politi" written on them, which was simply removed during post-production.
- All of Val Kilmer's lines in the film were dubbed. In March 2017, Kilmer revealed that he was being treated for cancer and that his tongue had swollen, although "it's getting better now."
- Many scenes from the trailer (an explosion, a bear trap, letters from the Snowman) did not make it into the final cut. They had to be removed, otherwise the narrative logic would have required inserting fragments of the script into the film that had not even been shot.
