At the very beginning of filming, director Asghar Farhadi posted an announcement on social media seeking actors. Those interested were asked to send the director short videos about themselves. Thousands of Iranians, dreaming of appearing in a film, responded to the announcement.
Filming was temporarily suspended due to the sudden death of sound producer Ayatollah Najafi.
Asghar Farhadi liked the idea for the film so much that he interrupted filming of a movie with Penélope Cruz in Spain and returned to Iran to film 'The Salesman'.
In Persian, the film is called Foreshande, or 'The Merchant.' In 2016, work was underway on a French drama with the same title, so Farhadi's film was released in French theaters under the title Le Client, meaning 'The Client'.
