• Screenwriter Jeff LaTulippe is a close friend of producer Dave Neustadter. He based the film's plot on a long-distance romance that Neustadter once experienced.
• Jason Sudeikis's character sports a mustache in the film because the actor was simultaneously working on another project where his character was required to have one. The script was therefore amended to include a scene where he explains to his friends (played by Justin Long and Charlie Day) why he's wearing the mustache – to remind older women he's pursuing what it was like to date men with mustaches and beards in the 1970s and 1980s.
