The film is based on Elizabeth Gilbert's novel "Eat, Pray, Love" (2006).
Filming began in August 2009 and took place in New York, Naples, Rome, Pataudi, and Bali.
As a condition of filming in Bali, actress Julia Roberts stipulated that her close family be present there with her during the shoot.
Julia Roberts offered the role of director of the film to her friend Garry Marshall (1934-2016), but he did not want to leave the United States and declined. Instead, he offered the actress a role in his melodrama 'Valentine's Day' (2010), which he was filming at the time, and Roberts agreed. Ryan Murphy became the director of 'Eat Pray Love'.
