Short description
A young girl named Mija risks everything to prevent a powerful, multi-national company from kidnapping her best friend - a massive animal named Okja.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The Animal Liberation Front is a real organization founded in 1976. Its activists practice "direct action" to liberate animals from captivity and sabotage businesses involved in industries that use animals.
  • The film was booed due to technical errors during its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Festival administrators subsequently had to apologize to the filmmakers for their staff.
  • In the New York parade scene, Tilda Swinton is dressed in a hanbok – a traditional Korean costume. Hanboks are typically very colorful and combine reds, blues, and other bright colors, but the actress’s hanbok is pale pink.
  • The scene in which Lucy and other high-ranking corporate employees watch a video of Mi-jae in Seoul is a reference to a real event captured by Pete Souza. He was the former chief photographer for the 44th President of the United States, Barack Obama. One of his photographs shows Obama, Hillary Clinton, and other members of the US Administration watching the operation to eliminate Osama bin Laden on a computer monitor in 2011.
  • Director Bong Joon-ho agreed to cast Choi Woo-shik after watching him in “Train to Busan,” and was very pleased to learn that the actor had lived in Canada and spoke English, as the role required lines to be delivered in English.
