Short description
Three teenagers are confined to an isolated country estate that could very well be on another planet. The trio spend their days listening to endless homemade tapes that teach them a whole new vocabulary. Any word that comes from beyond their family abode is instantly assigned a new meaning. Hence 'the sea' refers to a large armchair and 'zombies' are little yellow flowers. Having invented a brother whom they claim to have ostracized for his disobedience, the uber-controlling parents terrorize their offspring into submission.
What's left behind the scenes
- The children's names are never mentioned in the film.
- Work on the film began with a conversation between Yorgos Lanthimos (who became the film’s director and one of the screenwriters) and friends who were about to get married. Lanthimos expressed doubts about the institution of marriage and family, and it occurred to him to make a film about a man who would stop at nothing to protect his family.
- One could say the film is about claustrophobia, and the filmmakers chose the largest house they could find as the filming location, complete with a swimming pool and a huge garden.
