- The film is based on the novella by Beverly Cleary, "Ramona and Beezus" (1955).
- Initially, Ramona and Beezus were secondary characters in Beverly Cleary's series of children's books, where Henry Higgins was the main character. A total of six works were published as part of this series from 1950 to 1964. The first book dedicated specifically to the sisters Ramona and Beezus appeared between them (in 1955), and then another seven novellas were published between 1968 and 1999.
- Miley Cyrus and her younger sister were contenders for the roles of Ramona and Bizous.
