The film is based on the graphic novel of the same name by Posy Simmonds, which was in turn based on Thomas Hardy’s novel “Far from the Madding Crowd” (1874).
The film can be considered a free adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s novel (1840-1928). One of its characters writes a book about Hardy, and there is a photograph of Hardy in his office. Furthermore, the film takes place in Dorset, where many of the writer’s works are set. At the beginning of the film, an advertisement is shown that uses the title of Hardy’s novel “Far from the Madding Crowd” instead of a slogan.
