What's left behind the scenes

  • Unlike the film, the real icebreaker 'Mikhail Somov'’s drift occurred during the polar night.
  • The film's plot is partially based on real events that occurred in 1985 with the icebreaker "Mikhail Somov," which became trapped in Antarctic ice.
  • The nuclear icebreaker "Lenin," which was decommissioned and permanently docked in Murmansk in 1989, was used for filming the movie.
  • The iceberg, like the ice field with the ice-bound icebreaker, is also drifting and could not have broken through the ice to ram the ship.
  • Captain Petrov easily finds a Rubik's Cube that was thrown away two weeks prior, while his own footprints are covered in snow within minutes.
  • Captain Sevchenko is delivered from the mainland by a Mi-2 helicopter, which has a flight range of less than 600 kilometers.
