The journalist from the British newspaper The Observer was actually named Nicole Maubrey, and she replaced certain words in the secret email correspondence. She was played by Hanako Footman, who specifically met with the journalist to portray her as convincingly as possible.
When the intention to make this film was first announced (in 2016), it was assumed that both the project's director and the actress in the leading role would be different. Justin Chadwick was supposed to direct, and Natalie Dormer was to play Catherine Gunn. Paul Bettany was also considered for the role of Martin Bright (it was played by Matt Smith). Martin Freeman, Harrison Ford, and Anthony Hopkins were also expected to participate.
