What's left behind the scenes

  • Stan and Ollie wear gold lapel pins indicating their membership in the "Grand Order of Water Rats" – a British show business charity whose members donate money to deserving people and causes. Stan and Ollie wear pins ## 465 and 466.
  • Viewers might think the taxis near the Savoy Hotel are driving on the wrong side of the road, but Savoy Court is the only street in Britain with a name and right-hand traffic. This arrangement is believed to have been established so that women could exit vehicles first, as they traditionally sat behind the driver (or coachman).
  • The film is dedicated to the memory of Lois Laurel, Stan Laurel’s daughter. She passed away in 2017.
  • The film shows Stan and Ollie performing in small theaters with few audience members, whereas they actually performed in major cities in the largest theaters, packed to capacity.
  • The US flag shown in the film has 50 stars, although the plot takes place in 1953, and the US flag didn't have 50 stars until 1960. Several Dubliners are also waving US flags with 50 stars.
  • John C. Reilly, who played one of the leading roles, was offered a choice: to wear a visually thickening suit (which would be unbearably hot, but would be equipped with tubes running along the body with circulating cold water) or to gain over 40 kg to better resemble Oliver Hardy. He chose the first option, as he had preferred to gain weight for one of his previous roles, but later found that it took so much time and effort to lose the weight again that the actor vowed never to gain weight for a role in the future.
  • It took between 3 and 4 hours to apply John C. Reilly's makeup for the role of Oliver Hardy. The actor was covered in special prosthetics from head to toe, and also wore visually thickening costumes.
  • Stan and Ollie wear golden lapel pins indicating their membership in the “Grand Order of Water Rats” – a British show business charity, whose members donate money to deserving people and causes. Stan and Ollie wear badges numbers 465 and 466.
