- As a promotional campaign, the Canadian branch of Warner Bros. Pictures commissioned two enormous petri dishes and installed them in a shopping mall window in Toronto. Over several days, bacteria and fungi grew in them, forming the film's title and biohazard symbols.
- Dr. Ian Lipkin, a film consultant and professor of epidemiology at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University, stated that the virus described in the film is reminiscent of the Nipah virus, which was first identified in Malaysia in the late 1990s during an outbreak among pig farmers.
- All scenes featuring Kate Winslet were filmed in 10 days.
- Following the film "The Informant!" (2009), Steven Soderbergh and Scott Burns intended to make a biographical film about the controversial German filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl, but Soderbergh abandoned the idea, realizing how limited his audience would be. After that, Soderbergh and Burns decided to create a drama about the challenges facing the global healthcare system.
