Short description
A traumatised veteran, unafraid of violence, tracks down missing girls for a living. When a job spins out of control, his nightmares overtake him as a conspiracy is uncovered leading to what may be his death trip or his awakening.
What's left behind the scenes
- Director Lynn Ramsay sent the lead actor, Joaquin Phoenix, an audio file featuring firecrackers and poppers interspersed with the sounds of gunshots. A note accompanying it stated that this is roughly what's happening in his character's head.
- According to director Lynn Ramsay, the scene in which Joaquin Phoenix's character lies on the floor next to the agent and begins to sing was conceived by the actor himself.
- In the novel of the same name by Jonathan Ames, the protagonist uses props such as rubber gloves and various devices. Lynn Ramsay claims that it was Joaquin Phoenix who suggested discarding most of these to give his character more authenticity.
- The film was approved for the Cannes Film Festival while still unfinished, and was completed only a few days before its first screening. Ramsay stated that an unfinished version of the film was shown in Cannes.
