Short description
In the future, an outbreak of canine flu leads the mayor of a Japanese city to banish all dogs to an island used as a garbage dump. The outcasts must soon embark on an epic journey when a 12-year-old boy arrives on the island to find his beloved pet.
What's left behind the scenes
- The filmmakers were influenced by the works of Akira Kurosawa (1910-1998) and the Christmas specials of Rankin/Bass Productions, Inc.
- The title "Isle of Dogs" is a play on words. If pronounced quickly, it sounds like "I love dogs".
- Around 20,000 faces were created for the film, and 2,000 puppets were made for the secondary characters. It usually took 2-3 months to create a puppet for one of the main characters.
- Alpaca wool was used to simulate dog fur.
- Director Wes Anderson organized a competition for those wishing to voice a role in the film. Applicants were only required to donate any amount over $10 to the account of a non-profit organization founded by Martin Scorsese to restore and preserve old films.
- The title "Isle of Dogs" is a play on words. If you say it quickly, it sounds like "I love dogs."
