Following its box office success, "Sometimes a Great Idea..." became the first film shown on HBO after its initial launch in November 1972.
During rehearsals for the motorcycle race scene, the director and leading man Paul Newman (1925-2008) broke his leg, and the start of filming had to be delayed.
Director Richard A. Colla was fired for having his own ideas about the technical aspects of directing, and Paul Newman became the director, later admitting that combining the duties of director and actor was quite challenging.
Following its success at the box office, "Sometimes a Great Notion..." became the first film to be shown on HBO after its initial launch in November 1972.
