What's left behind the scenes

  • Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward met on the set of this film. They married on January 29, 1958, and remained together until Newman's death in 2008.
  • The scene where the barn is burning took 5 days to film. Director Martin Ritt was initially dissatisfied with the way the sunlight looked in the shot, then he disliked the appearance of the sky, and finally how the wind was blowing.
  • Martin Ritt is known as a man who managed to tame the temperamental Orson Welles. Once, Ritt drove Welles into the wilderness, pushed him out of the car, and left him alone to find his way back.
