What's left behind the scenes

  • The meteoroid is approaching Earth at approximately 35,000 miles per hour, and the film states that it will collide with Earth in a week. In reality, it would take at least six months to cover the distance from the asteroid belt to Earth's orbit.
  • Negotiations with Challenger 2 are being conducted in real time at mission control. In reality, it would take several minutes for signals to travel such a vast distance.
  • The spacecraft with astronauts that we see in the film is an actual model of NASA's first fully equipped space station, 'Skylab'.
  • The footage of the avalanche (skier in red) was taken from the 1978 film 'Avalanche'.
  • Some of the communication between mission control and 'Hercules' in the background is taken from recordings of actual conversations made during the 'Apollo' missions.
