• Ray Bradbury (1920-2012), whose film was based on his novel of the same name (1953), once asked an acquaintance who was a firefighter at what temperature paper catches fire, and heard in response: "451 degrees Fahrenheit." The writer liked the phrase so much that he used it as the title of his novel, although in reality paper does not ignite at that temperature.
• Initially, Mel Gibson was going to direct the film. He also hoped to cast Tom Cruise in the lead role, however, neither Gibson nor Cruise were able to take on the project due to commitments to other films.
