Demetrius Shipp Jr.'s father, who played Tupac, worked with Death Row Records and produced the song "Toss It Up" from Tupac Shakur's album "The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory".
John Singleton was originally slated to direct the film, but he was unable to reach an agreement with the studio regarding how Tupac would be portrayed. Singleton left the project, but stated he hoped to one day make his own film about Tupac. Singleton was also the only director to receive Afeni Shakur's blessing to adapt the story of her son.
