Short description
Five years after an ominous unseen presence drives most of society to suicide, a survivor and her two children make a desperate bid to reach safety.

What's left behind the scenes

  • According to Sandra Bullock, she spent half of all filming with her eyes closed.
  • According to the actors, during filming, the birds seemed to understand John Malkovich: if he told them to move, they did.
  • Sandra Bullock personally persuaded Sarah Paulson to play her sister in the film.
  • Initially, both Sandra Bullock and director Susanne Bier refused to participate in the project.
  • Whenever and wherever possible, filming was done with real birds.
  • The film includes footage of a real railway disaster – the derailment of an oil train in the town of Lac-Mégantic in the Canadian province of Quebec. The disaster occurred on June 6, 2013, when the train derailed, tankers caught fire and exploded, resulting in 47 fatalities. On January 21, 2019, Netflix apologized for using this footage but refused to remove it from the film. (Footage of this disaster was cut from the series “Travelers” (2016-2018).) On March 14, 2019, it was ultimately decided to remove the disaster footage from the film.
