What's left behind the scenes

  • During the filming of a scene near the end of the film, when Karl, played by Max von Sydow (1929-2020), goes in search of a new settlement, the director and cinematographer Jan Truell forgot to shout "Cut!", and the actor disappeared into the distance awaiting the director's command, and no one even noticed until lunchtime.
  • Stanley Kubrick (1928-1999) was a big fan of the film. He even called Truell to tell him so, but Truell took it as a prank and hung up (this happened repeatedly when Kubrick called someone to express his admiration). Kubrick particularly liked the costumes, and even brought costume designer Ulla-Britt Söderlund (1943-1985, who worked on the film) on board to assist Milena Canonero when costumes from the 18th century were needed for his 1975 drama, *Barry Lyndon*.
  • Jan Truell and screenwriter Wilhelm Moberg (1898-1973) argued about whether the actors should speak with an accent. Truell insisted they speak with a Småland accent (Småland is a historical province in southern Sweden, where the film is set), while Moberg didn't want any dialect to be heard in the film at all. As a result of a compromise, Max von Sydow and Liv Ullmann's characters speak with an accent, while all the others – for example, the characters played by Eddie Axberg and Pierre Lindstedt – speak with a very slight accent.
