The film is based on Irwin Shaw's novel «The Young Lions» (1948).
Irwin Shaw (1913-1984) disliked the sympathetic portrayal of the Nazi that Marlon Brando (1924-2004) created. He deliberately crafted such an image because both director Edward Dmytryk (1908-1999) and screenwriter Edward Anhalt (1914-2000) believed it would be more accurate and better represent the German people as a whole. Furthermore, after World War II, the German market opened up to Hollywood productions, which also played a role.
The film is based on Irvin Shaw's novel "The Young Lions" (1948).
