Alejandro González Iñárritu was initially considered as the director, but he was unable to participate due to commitments to other projects.
The film's premiere was initially scheduled for late 2016, but it was postponed to 2018 following the announcement that Walt Disney Pictures would be releasing Jon Favreau's 'The Jungle Book' in 2016.
Filming took place on location in South Africa and on a set in the United Kingdom. According to director Andy Serkis, a whole village set was built on location in South Africa.
King Louie is not mentioned in Rudyard Kipling's book (1865-1936). Walt Disney Studios holds exclusive rights to this character, and therefore he does not appear in the film.
