Short description
A police raid in Detroit in 1967 results in one of the largest citizens' uprisings in the history of the United States.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Filming took place in September 2016 in Brockton, Massachusetts. Sets depicting 1967 Detroit were built on the site known as the "Freedom Tree" – a sycamore planted in 1763 on one of the stops of the Underground Railroad (the name given to the secret system of routes used to organize escapes and transport enslaved African Americans from the slave states of the South to the North). During the Civil War, slaves traveling north hid during the day in Edward Bennett's barn and traveled at night.
  • John Boyega was fortunate enough to meet Melvin, the security guard he portrayed on screen.
  • Some episodes of the film were shot on Ashmont Street in Boston. The film also features the house of the parish priest of the All Saints Episcopal Church on the same street. The church itself is also shown in the film.
  • Using a technique she first experimented with in her work on the war thriller "The Hurt Locker" (2008), director Kathryn Bigelow used 3-4 cameras simultaneously, constantly circling the actors. Bigelow kept the entire set lit and rarely used close-ups. Each scene was shot from multiple takes to choose the one that best conveyed the emotional intensity.
  • The concert was filmed at Emerson Majestic Theater in Boston. It is located on the grounds of Emerson College, which many entertainment industry professionals attended.
