In the original script, Peter Shane, played by Anthony Perkins, was a shoe salesman. Screenwriter Barry Sandler changed his profession to a priest at Perkins' suggestion, in order to further mock the moral standards of the people of the United States.
The role of Bobby was offered to Jeff Bridges, but after the offer came fierce financial disputes, and the role went to John Loflin.
