Short description
Norma Rae is a southern textile worker employed in a factory with intolerable working conditions. This concern about the situation gives her the gumption to be the key associate to a visiting labor union organizer. Together, they undertake the difficult, and possibly dangerous, struggle to unionize her factory.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film is based on a real campaign to organize a union in a small town in North Carolina. The character of Norma Rae is based on Crystal Lee Sutton (1940-2009). The union organizer Warszowski is based on Eli Zivkovic. In 1974, workers at J.P. Stevens Mill joined the Textile Workers Union of America thanks to the efforts of Sutton and Warszowski, but the union did not sign its first contract until 10 years later. Some scenes in the film recreate real events – for example, when Norma holds a sign that says “Union,” when the factory workers shut down the machines, and when Norma wakes up her children to tell them about her relationships with their fathers.
