  • The film is based on the true story of Billy Cook, a serial killer from the 1940s and 50s.
  • The screenplay was based on a story by Daniel Mainwaring, who was blacklisted at the time and therefore not credited in the film.
  • Filming began on June 24, 1952, and wrapped up at the end of July. Location shooting took place in California – in Alabama Hills near Lone Pine and in Big Pine.
  • Working titles for the film were “The Difference” and “The Persuader.”
