Short description
San Jose, California, 1906. Isolated in her labyrinthine mansion, eccentric firearm heiress Sarah Winchester believes that she is being haunted by the souls of those killed by the guns manufactured by her company.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film's plot is inspired by real events that took place in the late 19th century.
  • The Winchester House has approximately 160 rooms, including 40 bedrooms, 2 ballrooms (one completed, the other unfinished), 47 fireplaces, around 10,000 windows (some of which are stained glass), 17 chimneys, 2 basements, and 3 elevators.
  • According to records kept by the owners of Mystery House, Sarah Winchester continuously built and rebuilt the house for 38 years. The Winchester House has windows and doors in the floor, doors that lead to walls, and staircases leading to the ceiling. Its total area is approximately 6 acres.
  • The film's promotional poster – Helen Mirren sitting in a carriage in mourning attire – replicates the only known photograph of Sarah Winchester at the estate in San Jose, California.
  • The first company owned by Oliver Winchester, in partnership with his twin brother Samuel, made men's shirts. In the 1860s, Winchester invested in the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company, a manufacturer of revolvers created by Horace Smith and Daniel Wesson. When the arms company went bankrupt, Winchester bought it out and paid off its debts of $57,000.
  • The Winchester House is located on Winchester Boulevard in the city of San Jose, California, USA. It is believed to be haunted by the spirits of those killed by the rifle created by Oliver Winchester (1810-1880). In 1884, the house was purchased by Sarah Winchester (approx. 1840-1922), the widow of the inventor's son. Since 1923, the building has served as a tourist attraction.
  • The massacre in the Winchester mansion is a product of the filmmakers' imagination.
