- Director Jordan Peele once said that he was inspired to write the screenplay and shoot the film by George A. Romero's classic horror film "Night of the Living Dead" (1968).
- Filming took 28 days.
- Jordan Peele was inspired to write the screenplay by an Eddie Murphy sketch on a show, in which his character was preparing to meet his girlfriend's parents.
- Daniel Kaluuya received the role immediately after a successful audition. Director, screenwriter, and one of the producers, Jordan Peele, stated that Kaluuya performed the key scene where his character had to cry in five takes, and in each take he played it so perfectly that a tear always streamed down his cheek at exactly the same moment.
- Jordan Peele became the first African American screenwriter, producer, and director to earn over $100 million for a debut film.
- In the initial version of the script, the ending was more bleak (Chris was supposed to be arrested for the murder of Rose and her family). But by the time of filming, Jordan Peele decided to make the ending more optimistic. He was prompted to do so by the numerous cases of African Americans being killed by police in the United States.
