What's left behind the scenes

  • A film adaptation of Alexandre Dumas' novel "Twenty Years After".
  • With the exception of the minor character of the executioner from Lille, the same actors who appeared in the first two films participated in the third part.
  • Philippe Noiret starred in another film based on Alexandre Dumas' works about the Musketeers, "The Daughter of D'Artagnan" (1994), where he played D'Artagnan.
  • Jean-Pierre Cassel, who played Louis XIII in the other films of the trilogy, appears in this film in a cameo role as Cyrano de Bergerac.
  • According to the plot, 20 years have passed since the events of the last film, although in reality only 17 years had passed since the filming of the last one.
  • Roy Kinnear died during filming after falling from a horse. The filmmakers added a dedication to the actor in the credits.
  • On September 19, 1988, during filming in Toledo (Spain), Roy Kinnear fell from a horse, fracturing his pelvis, and died the following day in a Madrid hospital. Before the accident, Kinnear repeatedly objected to being filmed riding a horse, as he couldn't ride and had no experience with horseback riding. He requested a stunt double for this scene precisely because he feared falling off the horse, but a double could not be found, and he had to film the scene himself, which led to tragic consequences.
  • Oliver Reed required a stunt double for the fight scenes, as the actor himself suffered from obesity, gout, and kidney problems.
  • Charlton Heston would have liked to reappear on screen as Cardinal Richelieu, but by the time this film takes place (1648), Richelieu was already dead. Director Richard Lester ordered a portrait of Richelieu to be painted, and Heston was used as the model. (The portrait can be seen on screen at the beginning of the film.) After filming was completed, the portrait was solemnly presented to Heston as a gift.
