What's left behind the scenes
- To capture his conversation with SS officer Franz Suchomel, who did not consent to being included in the film, director Claude Lanzmann had to resort to trickery: he filmed the interview with a special infrared camera hidden by assistants. Suchomel's friends and children found out. Claude Lanzmann was severely beaten by them and spent many days in the hospital. The film was released after Suchomel's death in 1979.
- 350 hours of raw footage were shot for the film.
- It took 11 years to make the film.
