What's left behind the scenes
- The red hats worn by the characters directly allude to Jacques Yves Cousteau, the famous underwater explorer and filmmaker, whose work the film is dedicated to.
- During filming, Bill Murray became a certified scuba diver, spending over 40 hours underwater.
- Jane reads aloud to her child from Marcel Proust's "In Search of Lost Time".
- The film's plot is a parodic variation of Herman Melville's "Moby Dick".
- Pelé dos Santos (Seu Jorge) sings songs by David Bowie in Portuguese. Jorge became so famous after the film that he even released a separate album of songs sung in the movie – “The Life Aquatic Featuring Seu Jorge”.
- Adidas released sneakers that exactly replicate the shoes worn by Steve Zissou (Bill Murray).
- Cate Blanchett did not rehearse the scene with the night jellyfish (when she first appears on screen) in order to add spontaneity to the episode.

- The original script stipulated that the pirates were inhabitants of Indonesia, but the film was shot in Italy, where there were not many Indonesians, so the pirates were made Filipinos.
- Gwyneth Paltrow was initially cast in the role of Jane Winslet-Richardson, but she was unable to participate in the filming due to commitments to other projects.
