Short description
Away at college, Sidney Prescott thought she'd finally put the shocking murders that shattered her life behind her... until a copycat killer begins acting out a real-life sequel.

What's left behind the scenes

  • All the actors received a script missing the last ten pages, so no one knew who the killer was in the film until it was time to shoot the final scene. All the actors who starred in the film signed a special contract obligating them not to discuss the film's plot twists in the media, or to reveal the killer's identity.
  • The last ten pages of the script were printed on gray paper to make them impossible to photocopy.
  • Wes Craven played a cameo role in the film: he can be seen in the background at the hospital.
  • Kevin Williamson (the film's screenwriter) played a journalist interviewing Cotton.
  • Matthew Lillard, who played one of the main characters in 'Scream,' can be seen in the background during the college party.
  • Most of the exterior scenes were filmed at Agnes Scott College in Atlanta.
  • Rose McGowan can be spotted in the crowd at the movie theater.
  • "Theme of Dewey" and some other pieces from the soundtrack were taken from the soundtrack to "Broken Arrow," which was composed by Hans Zimmer. When the soundtrack was released on CD, it included compositions written solely by Marco Beltrami, although some of them were not used in the film.
  • In most cases, voices for phone calls are recorded not during filming, but during post-production. However, Roger L. Jackson, who played "the voice," actually spoke on a cell phone with the actors in scenes where the killer calls various characters in the film. Roger was constantly present on the set, but in a way that the actor speaking on the phone couldn’t see him.
  • Gale mentions her explicit photos that appeared on the internet. A similar situation occurred with Courteney Cox in the mid-1990s.
  • Poleta Patterson, who played the usher at the movie theater who gave Maureen and Phil the masks, won the role in a special contest held by MTV.
  • Erik Mabius, Natasha Gregson Wagner, and Paula Marshall auditioned for various roles in the film.
  • The girl Cici is talking to on the phone before the killer calls is Salma Blair.
  • Officers Kyle Richards and Brian Andrews are named exactly the same as the two actors who played the children looked after by Jamie Lee Curtis in 'Halloween' (1978).
  • The tagline for 'Stab' (the movie within the movie) is 'It's gonna hurt.'
  • The film's script was carefully guarded: only the lead actors, the director, the screenwriter, the producers, and studio executives were allowed to read the full version. None of the actors knew who the killer was, as they didn't receive the last 10 pages. However, despite all precautions, an early version of the script still leaked online. Kevin Williamson had to urgently rewrite the film's ending and many other scenes. When filming began, the final version of the script was not yet complete.
  • Rules for horror movie sequels: 1) The number of corpses is always higher. 2) The murder scenes are always more elaborate and more brutal. 3) Never, under any circumstances, assume the killer is dead.
  • The working title of the film was “Scream Sequel”.
  • Every actor auditioning for the role of Derek had to sing “I Think I Love You” (Derek sings this song in the cafeteria).
  • Sarah Michelle Gellar agreed to star in the film without reading the script.
