What's left behind the scenes

  • In Philip Reeve’s novel, plastic Mickey and Pluto are mentioned as “gods of lost America with animal heads.” This is a Universal film, and it uses plastic Minion figurines from the animated franchise “Despicable Me” (2010, 2013, 2017).
  • Producer Peter Jackson acquired the rights to the novel in 2009, but the official announcement of the film's production was not made until 2016. Jackson brought in some specialists he had previously worked with on the “Lord of the Rings” and “Hobbit” trilogies, and filming took place in New Zealand from April to July 2017.
  • The film is set no earlier than 3119. The protagonist, played by Robert Sheehan, eats a pastry with a 'best before' date of 2118, which was 'at least a thousand years ago'.
  • In the book, Esther is almost completely devoid of a nose and one eye. For the film, the number of scars was reduced.
