Short description
In 1999, teenage sisters Celeste and Eleanor survive a seismic, violent tragedy. The sisters compose and perform a song about their experience, making something lovely and cathartic out of a catastrophe - while also catapulting Celeste to stardom. By 2017, Celeste is a mother to a teenage daughter of her own and is struggling to navigate a career fraught with scandals when another act of terrifying violence demands her attention.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Rooney Mara was initially cast in the lead role, but the project fell behind schedule, and Mara left. The role was then given to Natalie Portman.
  • The dressing room where Celeste has a nervous breakdown before the concert is the same one as in Darren Aronofsky's drama "Black Swan" (2010), where the main character, also played by Natalie Portman, also experiences a breakdown.
  • Natalie Portman filmed all of her scenes in just 10 days.
  • The choreography was staged by Benjamin Millepied, who is Natalie Portman's husband.
  • The beginning of the film features several references to Columbine High School (Jefferson County, Colorado). The film's action also takes place in 1999. The image of a student helping another student climb down from a third-floor window recreates a famous photograph of the school. As in real life, in the film the villain intended to detonate an explosive device in a car, and he also – as in real life – failed.
