- The screenplay is based on a 2003 article by David Grann for The New Yorker magazine entitled 'The Old Man with the Gun.' It was subsequently included in Grann's book 'The Devil in the White City' (2010).
- Footage from the crime drama "Chase" (Arthur Penn, 1966) starring Robert Redford was incorporated into the prison escape scene.
