The film is based on the play of the same name.
The exposure of the psychic at the beginning of the film is based on real events. Illusionist James Randi, known for fighting charlatans posing as psychics, exposed Peter Popoff, a televangelist and faith healer who healed the sick by laying on of hands. Before the sessions, Popoff asked viewers to fill out special cards, and his wife passed information from these cards to him via a radio earpiece undetectable to outsiders. Randi managed to intercept his wife's radio transmission to her husband.
