In the final scene, the audience hears Sherman say, "This is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. It is the end of the beginning." This is a paraphrased statement by Winston Churchill (1874-1965) from a speech on November 10, 1942, when he used almost the same words to describe a turning point in World War II.
To create the effect of a temporal transition through the portal, operator Rene Ohashi created a glow by rotating hoops covered with a film based on polyethylene terephthalate polyester fiber (trade name "Mylar," a substance created by DuPont in the early 1950s).
The film has a second ending, which was only shown to audiences in foreign markets. In it, William and Louisa are transported to Eden in the distant future and find themselves in each other's arms.
