What's left behind the scenes

  • The letters “BFP” are visible on Peter’s suitcase. These are the initials of Benjamin Franklin Parker, Ben’s uncle, after whose death Peter Parker learned to use his powers responsibly.
  • Peter Parker's birthday is indicated in his passport. It is August 10th. Spider-Man first appeared in Amazing Fantasy #15 on August 10, 1962.
  • A poster with Crusher Hogan can be seen at a charity fundraising event. He is a wrestler from the Amazing Fantasy comic book series, against whom Peter Parker, in a mask, entered the ring in issue #15, where Spider-Man first appeared.
  • Towards the end of the film, the viewer sees a car with the license plate “AMF 1562”. This is a reference to issue #15 of the Amazing Fantasy series, where Spider-Man debuted in August 1962.
  • As his favorite flower, Peter tells Michelle it’s a black dahlia and explains, “it’s because of the murder.” This is a reference to the famous unsolved murder of Elizabeth Short (1924-1947) in Los Angeles.
  • Filming began in July 2018 and wrapped on October 16 of the same year.
  • Actor J.B. Smoove landed the role of Julius Dell in this film after appearing in an Audi commercial with Tom Holland as part of the promotion for the movie 'Spider-Man: Homecoming'.
  • According to screenwriters Chris McKenna and Eric Sommers, actor Jake Gyllenhaal made a significant contribution to the development of the Mysterio character. For example, Jake liked the idea that Mysterio manipulates the public's love for superheroes, and he suggested taking it further – which is why the first half of the film shows Mysterio's heroism as realistically as possible. Jake also suggested giving the character a beard, as a hero who lost his Earth and is fighting for a planet in another universe wouldn't have time to shave.
  • At the end of the film, Flash Thompson is met by his personal driver, Gerald. According to Tony Revolori, who played the role, Flash was originally supposed to be met by his father, but he and producer Chris Bongiorno decided it would be better if Flash's parents didn't come to pick him up even after a life-threatening incident.
  • In the first post-credits scene, J.K. Simmons appears as J. Jonah Jameson, the editor-in-chief of the Daily Bugle, who exposes Spider-Man. Simmons previously played Jameson in Sam Raimi's 'Spider-Man' trilogy. This is the first time an actor has played the same role in different cinematic universes based on Marvel comics.
