Throughout the film, Leo recounts the storylines of his books. One of them tells of a girl who kills her father when he attempts to assault her, and together with her mother hides his body in a restaurant's freezer. This is the plot of the film 'Volver,' which Pedro Almodóvar will film in 2006.
When Leo first meets the character played by Juan Echanove, she lists several female writers, including Dorothy Parker (1893-1967). Later, Paco comes to her and says he has been given a day's leave, but it turns out he was released for only 2 hours. This is the plot of Parker's story “The Vacation.”
