What's left behind the scenes

  • Filming took place at Dino De Laurentiis Studios in Rome.
  • It ranks 90th in attendance among foreign films in Soviet cinema distribution.
  • The film is based on Homer's "Odyssey".
  • Filming took place on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea and on the islands described by Homer. Filming of some scenes was also planned on the Greek island of Ithaca, Odysseus's homeland, but these plans were thwarted by an earthquake.
  • The mini-series was originally planned to be directed by Georg Wilhelm Pabst, but at the very last moment he refused to participate in the project, and it was ultimately shot by three directors, including Mario Bava.
  • The limbs of the mechanical cyclopes (their height exceeded 10 meters) were moved thanks to ropes and blacksmith's bellows. The armor and weapons were borrowed from museums in Rome, Naples, and Athens by the creators of the series.
