- German athlete Eugen Sandow (also known as Eugene Sandow, 1867-1925) is depicted as a typical strongman with not a single thought in his head. In reality, however, he was quite intelligent and a successful businessman. Because he was one of the first men to display his own body as a work of art, he is considered the father of bodybuilding (and that is exactly what is written on his tombstone).
