Short description
After years of increases in the greenhouse effect, havoc is wreaked globally in the form of catastrophic hurricanes, tornadoes, tidal waves, floods and the beginning of a new Ice Age. Paleoclimatologist Jack Hall tries to warn the world while also shepherding to safety his son, trapped in New York after the city is overwhelmed by the start of the new big freeze.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Director Roland Emmerich read the science fiction story “The Approaching Global Flood,” written by Art Bell and Whitley Strieber, before beginning to develop his original screenplay. Roland believes that the events described in the story could actually happen, and soon.
  • During a conversation with the audience in Denver, Roland stated that after the historical epic “The Patriot,” he was ready to create a new film related to natural phenomena. One day he was sitting at home on a gloomy day, and he had a burning desire to control the weather with his own hands.
  • The close-up of the crashed plane is actually a photograph of a real plane crash that occurred on January 25, 1990, on Long Island, New York.
  • The cosmonauts' suits are adorned with the logos of the Russian orbital station "Mir," even though it no longer existed at the time of the film's creation and release, having been replaced by the ISS.
  • The astronauts’ spacesuits are adorned with logos of the Russian Mir space station, even though it no longer existed at the time of the film’s creation and release, having been replaced by the ISS.
