A loose adaptation of the story with a series of unsolved murders in Ciudad Juárez, an industrial center in Mexico near the border with the United States and south of El Paso, Texas. The peak of the crimes occurred between 1993 and 2001. The exact number of abducted and murdered girls is a matter of debate.
In one scene of the film, Jennifer Lopez’s character tells Martin Sheen, who plays her boss, that “...it’s better not to be Mexican in this country.” Interestingly, she says this to a man whose real name is Ramón Gerardo Antonio Estévez, and who adopted the stage name “Martin Sheen” due to difficulties finding roles stemming from the name given to him by his parents, immigrants from Ireland (mother) and Spain (father).
