What's left behind the scenes

  • During that period (this is a 1941 film), California state laws limited the time an infant was allowed to spend on a film set to two hours a day. Within those two hours, the infant was only allowed in the soundstage for one hour, and in front of the lights for no more than 20 minutes. To gain extra time, director George Stevens (1904-1975) filmed twins in the role of Trina.
  • Disregarding the prevailing ethical code of film production at the time, Irene Dunne (1898-1980) and Cary Grant (1904-1986) share one marital bed rather than two separate ones. Furthermore, the film contains some allusions to them engaging in sexual activity on the train, which was unthinkable (these hints on screen, rather than the act itself) in the prudish 1940s.
