What's left behind the scenes

  • It took Bette Davis 40 minutes every morning to get dressed for filming. All the dresses shown in the film were historically accurate and included several layers of underwear and corsets.
  • The word “mademoiselle” is spoken 615 times in the film, a record listed in the Guinness Book of World Records.
  • At the beginning of World War II, Charles Boyer (1899-1978) left the United States for France and volunteered for the French army. Given that he was older than the other recruits at 40 years old, he was made a clerk. After early demobilization, Boyer returned to the United States and starred in this film.
  • Based on the true story of French politician Charles de Choiseul, Duke of Praslin, who was accused in 1848 of murdering his wife, Duchess Françoise de Praslin (1807-1847). While under house arrest, the Duke took poison and committed suicide, so the trial never took place. The death of Duchess Praslin remains the most famous unsolved murder in French history.
