The city scenes towards the end of the film were shot in the ghost town of Bannack, now located within a state park in Montana, USA. Bannack was the capital of the Montana Territory (an incorporated organized territory of the United States that existed from May 28, 1864, to November 8, 1889, when it officially entered the United States as a state). It was there that Sheriff Henry Plummer (1832-1864), who was also the leader of a gang of robbers, was once hanged without trial. Some buildings dating back to the 1880s have survived in the town, including the brick 'Hotel Meade'.
Representatives of animal welfare organizations were present during filming. No animals were harmed during the production.
The character of Lefty Brown was modeled after gunslinger Lefty B. Jay Wheeler.
