Short description
Life in 1847 Paris is as spirited as champagne and as unforgiving as the gray morning after. In gambling dens and lavish soirees, men of means exert their wills and women turned courtesans exult in pleasure. One such woman is Marguerite Gautier, who begins a sumptuous romance with Armand Duval.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on the eponymous play by Alexandre Dumas fils (La Dame aux camélias, 1848).
  • Under the lush dresses of the 19th century, Greta Garbo wore ordinary slippers, firstly because it was comfortable, and secondly, it made the movements of her heroine (in not the most comfortable outfits) free and graceful.
  • The film inspired singer Milton Benjamin to write the song "I Will Love Like Robert Taylor Loves Greta Garbo" in 1936.
